What is an Appendectomy?

An appendectomy is the removal of the appendix. It is usually an emergency procedure, however can also be performed on patients who consistently suffer from appendicitis. The procedure can be either open (general surgery) or closed (laporoscopically).

What are the advantages of performing an appendectomy laporoscopically?

There are two main advantages of this procedure being performed laporoscopically, specifically:

  1. The recovery time is typically quicker, as the incision is smaller;
  2. Reduced scarring. Due to the incision being smaller, there is less scarring.
